When a player is thrown out at a base, especially home plate.
Those who are late do not get fruit cup.
A player who is late to practice, does not only not get to play in that game, they also get no fruit cup for mid-game snack.
I heard it most often as "those who come late... do not get fruit cup!" When someone is thrown out from the outfield.
How 'bout any time someone is late and misses out on something???
It was first spoken in the 70's film comedy "High Anxiety". ESPN used it during highlight coverage. I don't think most people caught the humor behind it.
The actual line is, "Those who are tardy do not get fruit cup."
